XXL additive manufacturing: a 120 kg aluminum demonstrator for defense, space and naval sectors

XXL additive manufacturing developed by IREPA LASER, a member of the Carnot MICA, showcases the strength of French technologies in producing large-scale metal parts.
Presented by Léo-Paul Kolb, research engineer, this demonstrator was produced in the XXL additive manufacturing cell at IREPA LASER, specialized in the development of complex, high-performance structures.

A 120 kg aluminum demonstrator produced in 50 hours

This XXL demonstrator is made of 5000-series aluminum, a material known for its corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.
The XXL additive manufacturing process made it possible to produce this 120 kg part in just 50 hours, with an average deposition rate of 1100 cm³/h, corresponding to between 2.7 and 3 kg of material deposited per hour.

These performances demonstrate the ability of IREPA LASER to manufacture large industrial components while maintaining a high level of precision and metallurgical quality.

A strategic technology for defense, aerospace and naval industries

Applications of XXL additive manufacturing are numerous and target high-value sectors:

  • Defense and ballistics: production of cryogenic tanks for missiles,
  • Aerospace: design of structural parts for satellites,
  • Oil & Gas: hydrogen storage and pressurized components,
  • Naval: manufacturing of corrosion-resistant parts for marine environments.

Thanks to the Carnot MICA, IREPA LASER makes this XXL additive manufacturing technology available to industrial players looking to accelerate the production of complex metal parts while reducing lead times and costs.
