IMPacT: Designing Smart and Sustainable Packaging

A joint laboratory between Aptar and IS2M to drive innovation in packaging materials
The IMPacT joint laboratory, inaugurated in late 2022, is the result of a collaboration between the Aptar Group, a global specialist in packaging systems for the cosmetics, healthcare, and food industries, and the Mulhouse Institute of Materials Science (IS2M), a joint CNRS/University of Haute-Alsace research unit and a member of the Carnot MICA network.
As the winner of an ANR call for projects, IMPacT is part of an applied research initiative aimed at designing smart and sustainable packaging capable of interacting with its environment while meeting performance, safety, and sustainability requirements.
One of the major challenges for this joint laboratory is to elucidate and control the interactions between materials and their environment: migration of components, stability of formulations, and resistance to moisture or heat. This multidisciplinary approach enables the design of functional materials that are safer and more environmentally friendly.
A long-term partnership between academic research and industry
This project builds on more than 10 years of collaboration between Aptar and IS2M. Researchers and engineers are working together to accelerate innovation and facilitate technology transfer from public research to industry.
Thanks to IS2M’s expertise in smart materials and access to its advanced characterization platforms, the teams can develop new generations of packaging: integrated sensors, recyclable materials, active surfaces, and shape-memory polymers.
For Aptar, this joint laboratory also serves as a bridge between academia and industry, fostering skill development and researcher mobility.
Supported by Carnot MICA, the IMPacT project perfectly illustrates the Institute’s mission: to bring research and industry together to design innovative, sustainable, and competitive solutions for the markets of tomorrow.
