Textured silicon surfaces with outstanding superhydrophobic surfaces

Researchers from Carnot MICA have managed to create textured silicon surfaces with outstanding superhydrophobic properties.

These surfaces, characterised by their extreme resistance to wetting by aqueous solutions, have also shown promising performance in controlling bacterial growth, paving the way to the creation of new biomaterials. The research teams chose a surface texturing technique using femtosecond laser technology, which produced four types of surface texture for specific machining conditions. Each has superhydrophobic properties. An unexpected consequence of these results is the need to develop an all-new method to characterise superhydrophobicity, using tensiometry technology.
